Body Mass Index (BMI) - How Underweight You Are

Have you heard the term BMI? BMI is the short form of Body Mass Index. Sometimes people referred to as Body Mass Indicator. This is a simple method to your measure yourself and know how underweight or over-weight you are. Most of us wish to have a lean muscular body. To achieve that you need to take action and you can take action only when you measure. You cannot take any fruitful action if you do not know your current state exactly.

BMI is one of the most simple and popular method of calculation as it depends only on your height and weight. So exactly what steps you need to take to know your BMI? First you need to measure your height and weight, calculate your BMI and then you need to compare your BMI to standard BMI scale to see where you stands now.

If you have taken you weight and height in pound and foot then you need to follow this formula:
BMI = (weight in pounds * 703) / (height in inches)2
So first convert your height into inches. 12 inches makes 1 foot. So if your height is 5 foot 9 inches then your height in inch is 5*12 + 9 = 69 inches. Assuming your weight is 180 lb, your BMI = 180*703/ (69*69) = 26.6

If you have taken you weight and height in kilogram and meter then you need to follow this formula:
BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters) 2
So if your height is 1 meter 75 cm and weight 80 kilograms, your BMI = 80/1.75*1.75 = 26.1

BMI....................Weight Status

Below 18.5..........Underweight

18.5 -24.9...........Normal

25 - 29.9............Overweight

30 & Above.........Obese

If you are not a bodybuilder by profession, then you should target for BMI 20 to 22.
Now your are ready to action based on your current BMI and your target. Whatever action you take, you need to come back and measure your BMI time to time to check that you are progressing in right direction.
