The Causes of Being Underweight - Underweight Issues and the Causes

For every person, there is an ideal weight, depending on their height and sex, which will describe them as healthy. Someone who weight 10 percent less than their ideal weight is termed moderately underweight. Those who weight 20 percent less than their ideal weight are considered simply underweight. Being thin can be a result of many factors. Here are some of the causes of being underweight.

TYPE 1 DIABETES

Your body gets energy by making glucose from foods such as bread, potatoes, rice, milk and fruits. To use this glucose, you need insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body control the glucose level in your blood. Type 1 diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas doesn't produce insulin and as a result, glucose builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy.

INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE

This is the name of a group of disorders that cause your intestines to become red and swollen. The inflammation lasts for a long time and is usually reoccurring. Common inflammatory bowel diseases are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitus. Symptoms of this disease may include abdominal cramps and pain and diarrhea in addition to weight loss.

INTESTINAL PARASITES

These are parasites that live in the gastro intestinal tract of humans and animals. They get into the intestines by the mouth from uncooked or unwashed food and contaminated water or hands. Because these parasites can't produce food for themselves, they depend on us to survive. Parasites do damage to us by consuming our food and nutrients. The can also destroy our cells and tissues and they produce toxic waste products that can make us very sick.

POOR EATING HABITS

Don't panic just yet. One of the causes of being underweight could simply be a result of irregular eating habits. Skipping meals, frequent fasting and not getting enough exercise can cause you to become underweight. Nibbling at all hours or eating meals at any convenient time can lead to insufficient food intake and upset your digestive functions with reduced nutrients.

HEREDITARY

Being underweight isn't always necessarily an indication of health problems. The responsibility of being too thin can sometimes be placed on inheritance. If one or both of your parents are slight of build, that could also be the reason why you are as well. It may be simply because of the way your body is made. Underweight people may not have as many fat cells as others and this can result in less space to store fat. It could be that you have a specific body type that responds differently to food or have a naturally faster metabolism than most people.
Just like being overweight, being underweight for an extended period of time can cause eventual health problems. These include osteoporosis, anemia and infertility. When you know about the causes of being underweight, you can get the help that you need to gain weight for better health.
